The Writing & Critical Thinking Program for Kids

For elementary and middle school children.

Joy meets rigor

The clarity and quality of your child’s thought are just as important as their mastery of the mechanics of writing. We teach kids to love to write well—and think—using humor and deep respect for the joy of young children.

Affordable tutoring

Give your child the support they need to improve their writing and critical thinking—without the expense of a private tutor. June Writers provides a whole year of individual guidance and support for the equivalent of one hour of private tutoring.

Comprehensive feedback

Writing and thinking are iterative processes, strengthened by meaningful feedback. Our program offers personal feedback on each writing assignment, weekly personalized progress reports, optional support for schoolwork & applications, live help hours, and more.

Kids can be powerful writers & thinkers.

Imagine a writing and critical thinking program that takes your child far deeper than what they learn in school, but without the enormous cost of a tutor or special class. June Writers teaches the fundamentals and introduces sophisticated concepts normally only taught in high school and college. Your child will learn:

  • Mechanics & grammar

  • Argument development & analysis

  • Writing essays in multiple genres

  • Critical reading

  • Editing argument & line editing

  • Vocabulary and spelling, including Greek & Latin roots

  • Fiction storytelling

  • Beginning civics

  • And much more!

Our curriculum reflects best practices for writing and critical thinking development in children and is crafted to resonate with the beautifully wild minds of elementary- and middle-grade kids. We’re not afraid to meet kids where they are.

  • Practice examples for kids, by kids

  • Video lessons that explain why we use particular writing conventions and where there’s wiggle room to make other choices

  • Research projects that tap into your child’s unique interests

  • Flexible curriculum paths tailored to your child’s skill development

  • Skill quick checks that give your child immediate feedback

  • And much more!

June Writer, Age 8

“This is so much more fun than what we do in school, even when it’s hard. I like making up my own country and language, and the examples are really funny sometimes.”

June Writer, Age 12

“I love my school, but even the easier June Writers curriculum is so much more challenging than what I learn in class. Sometimes I’m shocked by how much I can write now.”

June Writer, Age 10

“The videos and practices are fun. I love the cats and like seeing their names at the end of each video.”

How It Works

  • Step 1: Log in

When you become a member, you’ll be able to log in to our private member area and access the video lessons, practices, tips, and other resources your child needs to begin their writing journey. You’ll also get information on how to complete the practices in our SeeSaw digital classroom and access our video Live Help Hours. Your child’s work will be private—visible only to your family and us. Learn more.

  • Step 2: Write & get feedback

Your child will complete their assigned practices at their own pace. Our highly-trained master teachers will give written (and video, as appropriate) feedback on each of your child’s assignments within 24 hours, and often ask them to edit their work. You’ll receive weekly progress reports with your child’s scores on assignments and overall feedback. Need help? Use our custom tips or drop into our Live Help Hours as much or as little as you want. Learn more about our method.

  • Step 3: Formal assessment

In addition to the immediate feedback on their writing assignments, your child will take quizzes at the end of all lessons as well as a test at the end of each level to check their progress and readiness for the next step in the June Writers program. We’ll score their quizzes and tests and provide you with tailored written feedback within 24 hours. The above image is an example of a quiz on foundational comma conventions (note: there are deliberate mistakes on the slide). Learn more about assessment.

NEW: Schoolwork & Application Help

Does your child need help tackling a school assignment or application?

We won’t write or edit your child’s text, but we will help them do the work themselves. We offer support for planning & content development, translating pre-writing work into a draft, and editing, as well as templates that give step-by-step guidance on how to complete typical school assignments. This is an optional service included in our standard membership program at no extra charge.
